Unknown to many, Fight Club actually had its beginnings as a short story of the same name, by novel author Chuck Palahniuk. The seven page story appeared in the 1995 book Pursuit of Happiness along with many other short stories and poems.

I personally liked the short story a lot better than the novel itself because it summed everything up very neatly in a short amount of space. It basically covers Fight Club's origins and rules, with some lines that were directly quoted in the movie. Marla is mentioned once, with no explanation of who she is, which makes me wonder if the story really was a complete entity before Palahniuk wrote the book... it certainly makes more sense if you have read/seen the longer version. My overall opinion? It doesn't tell you anything new, but it's cool to read.
